Sacred Elixir Wins JJ Atkins 2016 – Results

June 11th, 2016

The well-supported Tony Pike-trained New Zealand raider Sacred Elixir got the job done for the punters at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday winning the 2016 JJ Atkins in arrogant fashion.

After winning his debut down under at the Sunshine Coast on May 11, the Pour Moi gelding from Cambridge in NZ was last seen running a close sixth in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight ago.

Having done his best work late in the BRC Sires’, Sacred Elixir was tipped to improve going up to the mile in the $600,000 Group 1 BMW J.J. Atkins (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

And improve the promising two-year-old did, racing away to beat home two triple-figure roughies for a nearly four length victory in the JJ Atkins.

Jockey Zac Purton stayed aboard Sacred Elixir for the Group 1, the Kiwi-trained winner the first JJ Atkins favourite to win since Romantic Touch (2013).

After coming from back in the field to hit the front on the straight with 150m left to travel, on the line Sacred Elixir ($6) had a dominant margin to spare over the Stuart Kendrick-trained colt from the Sunshine Coast Charnley River ($126) who is a son of the 2000 JJ Atkins winner Show A Heart.

Rounding out the lucrative JJ Atkins trifecta this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival was the Liam Birchley-trained local Falvelon filly Heart Skipt A Beat ($126) who came off a Sunshine Coast win from May 22 and was impressive having been the widest runner around the bend in her maiden Black-Type assignment.

The JJ Atkins winner Sacred Elixir now shapes up as a promising Derby hope next season as a three-year-old including a possible shot at Melbourne’s Group 1 VRC Derby (2500m) in the spring.
