Jaws Of Steel has produced a number of impressive performances through a short four start career so far, but stamped himself as a legitimate JJ Atkins contender when returned from a brief freshen-up for a slashing third in the Pat Hyland Plate (1400m) at Flemington on May 21st.

Laing told Racing Victoria the gelding has thrived since arriving in Brisbane, and believes he is ready to lay a great account for himself in the 2016 JJ Atkins regardless of weather.

“He’s gone up very well,” Laing said.

“We went up ten days prior to the race, got in there a little bit earlier which is terrific, because the weather up there has been really good and he’s thrived.

“He worked nicely, did some even time work with Ryan Wiggins on board Saturday morning who was very happy with him.

“He did some slow work this morning which was good and a he gallops tomorrow morning on the grass.

“He’s shown no indication he won’t get through the wet. He’s tough, relaxed and he’s bred to get through it so if he does, he’ll run well.”

Laing said he was pleased to have confirmed Brad Rawiller to take the ride on the Sharkbite gelding in the 2016 JJ Atkins.

Hugh Bowman had first refusal and Brad rode him terrific at Mornington, so he’ll ride him and he knows him well,” he said.

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Jaws Of Steel ran on for a credible fourth in the Listed Spicer Thoroughbreds Valley Pearl (1200m) on debut before taking out the Mornington Sires’ Produce Stakes (1500m) on April 2nd.

Completely luckless in transit web seventh in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1400m) on April 16th in what was his only other start before the Pat Hyland Plate, Jaws Of Steel is currently rated a $15 chance in early 2016 JJ Atkins betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

The 2016 JJ Atkins field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (June 8th, 2016).
