Waller Pleased with 2015 JJ Atkins Trio

June 2nd, 2015

Trainer Chris Waller has unearthed leading sprinters Zoustar and Brazen Beau over the two most recently Brisbane Winter Carnivals and is set to launch a three-year-pronged attack on Group 1 success in Saturday’s 2015 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben.

Following impressive performances for second in the two most recent editions of the JJ Atkins, Zoustar and Brazen Beau progressed to standout Group 1 success over the following Spring Carnival; undoubtedly Waller’s long view again in 2015.

Having set classy two-year-old Counterattack for the feature race at the beginning of the carnival, Waller confirmed last-start winners Press Statement and Feast For Eyes will also contest the 2015 JJ Atkins.

“Sometimes it can be better looking after young horses in the winter and not having them race much as two-year-olds,” Waller told the Courier Mail.

“But all of these horses are ready to race (in the JJ Atkins).

“It is very hard measuring up Sydney midweek form to Saturday form but all my JJ horses are ready to race well.

“Counterattack has not had much luck in Brisbane and he would have been in the finish had he got clear running last time.”

Posting one win and a further three minors over four his six career starts so far, Counterattack charged home to win the TAB Place Multi Plate (1200m) first-up this time; progressing to luckless fourth place finishes in each of the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) since arriving in Brisbane.

Yet to taste anything but success, Press Statement undoubtedly faces his biggest task to date in the JJ Atkins but comfortably won both a Canterbury minor over 1100m and Rosehill race over 1350m in recent weeks.

Unable to make much of an impact over two starts through late spring, Feast For Eyes ran fourth in his first two starts this time; breaking through for a maiden four length win in the Tab.com.au Handicap (1550m) on May 27th.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 JJ Atkins odds, for which Press Statement figures as outright $4.80 favourite, Counterattack can be taken at a quote of $6.50 and Feast For Eyes a generous $13.
