Time For War Launches JJ Atkins 2014 Assault

May 6th, 2014

Gerald Ryan’s promising Snitzel colt Time For War will put their 2014 JJ Atkins claims on the line in Brisbane this weekend when they take on a field of fellow two-year-olds in the $175,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

One of the support races on Doomben’s BTC Cup Day program for Saturday, the Champagne Classic serves as the ideal lead-up for juveniles eyeing a run in the $500,000 Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

The Stradbroke Handicap Day Group 1 on June 7 is currently being considered for Time For War, with Ryan looking to see if they’re ready to step up to the mile this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

They’re one of 14 nominated for the Champagne Classic, and one of the top chances there having won two of their three starts to date.

A Rosehill win on debut back in November was followed by a nice first-up effort at the same track on March 29 when Time For War won the Group 2 Pago Page Stakes (1200m) in the mud.

They failed to keep their perfect record intact last start however when fourth behind Peggy Jean in Randwick’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12.

They failed to quicken on the Heavy ground that day after leading from the start, an effort they’re tipped to improve on this weekend back against a Group 2 field.

“He has done very well since the Sires and will be the only two-year-old we are taking to Queensland,” Ryan told AAP this week.

The Champagne Classic serves as a JJ Atkins trial then for Time For War who is one of the best fancied in futures odds for next one’s feature.

“He is entered for the J J Atkins next month but I’m not sure at this stage whether he is ready for 1600 metres yet,” Ryan added.

“We will play it by ear.”

JJ Atkins betting is currently led by recent Hawkesbury winner Meursault and Mick Price’s undefeated Redoute’s Choice Stakes champ Pressing.

Zululand is the other top fancy after the multiple Group 1 performer ran second to Go Indy Go in their latest elite level assignment, the Champagne Stakes over 1600m at Randwick on April 26.

Time For War meanwhile is just outside of them at an equal price with fellow Champagne Classic nominees, the Chris Waller-trained I Am Invincible colt Brazen Beau and the Darley-owned Blue Diamond sixth placed Mohave.
